What is financial planning?
Does saving for your financial future sometimes feel like chasing an unachievable goal? A financial plan can help you define the goals you’re trying to reach and outline the steps to help you reach them. Financial planning is more than reviewing and selecting investments. It’s the process of defining goals, assessing your financial resources and creating a strategy to help achieve your goals.
What are the steps for creating a plan?
1
Review
In the review stage, your financial advisor will examine your assets and liabilities, including everything from retirement accounts to credit card debts. They will also review your spending habits, income and savings trends, potential inheritance, and insurance coverage. Most importantly, they will get to know you to understand your goals, priorities, timeline and feelings about risk.

2
Analysis
Next, your financial advisor will conduct sophisticated analysis and take a deeper look to determine what risks have not been addressed, where you currently stand toward meeting your goals, and whether your investments align with both your risk tolerance and desired financial goals.

Recommendations
Your financial advisor may suggest changes to help you meet your goals. These could include savings and spending habits, debt reduction and adjusting your time horizon. They may suggest timing for beginning Social Security benefits and aligning your investments with your risk tolerance. They may find opportunities to improve tax efficiencies and may propose products to help provide protection for your income if you were to die or become disabled. Estate planning, charitable giving and any other specific personal goals are also addressed in your plan.

Monitoring
Ongoing monitoring of your plan allows you and your financial advisor to adjust for things that can alter your financial picture. Changes in your family, your job or other income sources, or changes to your risk tolerance as you approach retirement can require adjustments to your financial plan.
